What is the clout nail production line?
The clout nail production line is a process for manufacturing clout nails. This process involves several stages and different types of machines to transform steel wire into finished nails and meets the mass production of high-quality clout nails. Clout nails are used in various types of construction, such as crate construction, furniture repair, cabinet work, batten doors, and countertops. They are characterized by a short shank and a shin, large and flat head. The large head is designed to distribute force and prevent damage to materials. It helps hold the material firmly even in bad weather conditions. The length of the short shank can vary depending on the application, but is usually about three centimeters long. And nails can be smooth or ring shanks for increasing the holding force.
What are the components of the Wire Nail Production Line?
There are mainly three machines involved in the production of clout nails, which are wire drawing machine, clout nail making machine and polishing machine. The wire drawing machine uses different drawn dies to reduce the diameter of steel wire to the desired size. The nail making machine cuts the cold drawing wire into the set length, cuts the nail tip and makes the nail head. The nail polishing machine is used to polish clout nails with sawdust to make nails smooth and bright.
How to manufacture clout nails?
The production process of high-quality clout nails includes wire drawing, clout nail making, nail polishing, quality inspection and packaging.
This is the first step that the wire drawing machine draws the raw material steel wire Q195 or Q235 of diameter 6.5 mm into small diameter wire like 2.5mm, 3.5 mm, 3.7 mm and 4.5mm. Sharpening mill, drawing powder and butt welding machine are important in the drawing process. The steel wire first passes through the drawing powder and then enters the drawing die, which can reduce the friction between the steel wire and the drawing die and prolong the service time of the drawing die.
Clout nail making
The drawn wire is then fed into the clout nail making machine, which cuts the drawn wire into nails and makes nail heads. Different sizes of clout nail can be produced by adjusting the clout nail machine. The working principle of the clout nail making machine includes four stages. First, the drawn wire is fed into the clout nail making machine. Second, when the nail die holds the wire, the punch bar punches to form the nail head. Next, the feeding box sends the wire forward. Finally, the nail cutter cuts the cold drawn wire according to the set length and makes the nail point, and then the finished clout nails fall into the collection box.
Clout nails produced by the clout nail making machine have sharp edges and may have some residual oil or grease. The nail polishing machine is to polish clout nails with sawdust, engine oil, paraffin or other materials, ensuring they are free of burrs and bright. Sawdust is used to remove any sharp edges, engine oil is used to brighten clout nails and give a shiny surface, and paraffin increases clout nails’ rust resistance.
After polishing, clout nails need to undergo a quality inspection to remove any defective nails that are bent, lack a head, or have other quality issues. The quality inspection may involve manual and machine inspections to ensure the nails meet the required specifications.
Clout nails are packaged in cartons following the quality inspection. Different cartons fill different sizes and weights of nails, such as 1kg, 5kg, 20kg or 25kg per carton.

Auxiliary equipments in the production of clout nails
In addition to the three main equipments, the auxiliary devices mentioned below also play a significant role.
- Sharpening mill. The sharpening mill is to grind the raw material steel wire tip finely before passing it into the wire drawing machine.
- Butt welding machine. The butt welding machine ensures the continuous operation of the wire drawing machine. If the wire breaks during the wire drawing process, we need to use the butt welding machine to weld the two ends back together.
- Nail cutter grinder. The nail cutter grinder’s function is to grinder the nail cutter when it becomes blunt and make the cutter sharp again.
